The Max Weber Institute for Sociology (MWI) at Heidelberg University is located on the Bergheim campus. The institute was founded in 1960 and reestablished in 1970. Since 2011, it has borne the name of one of its most famous representative. The institute currently has five professorships.

Studies
The Max Weber Institute at Heidelberg University offers a comprehensive range of sociology courses. The foundation is laid by the bachelor's program, which is designed as a full-time course of study with a standard duration of six semesters. Building on this, the institute offers a consecutive master's program in sociology. This in-depth full-time program has a standard duration of four semesters. There is also the option of pursuing a doctorate in sociology.

Research
Research at the Max Weber Institute at Heidelberg University is characterized by a close link between sociological theory and empirical social research. A central focus is on the international comparative analysis of social institutions and structures.
