Profil des MWI

The profile of the MWI

The Max Weber Institute represents the full breadth of sociology in both research and teaching. Guided by the Weberian paradigm of interpretive sociology aimed at explanation, the Institute’s work is characterized by a consistently theory-driven approach to empirical research. The Institute’s strong externally funded research activities are organized around four core areas: sociological theory and the history of sociology; comparative institutional and organizational analysis; comparative analyses of social inequalities; and methods of empirical social research.

These research areas bring together established scholars as well as researchers at early stages of their academic careers. Together, they pursue a cultural and cross-societal comparative approach to social reality. A distinctive feature of the Institute’s profile is the research center Centre for Social Investment and Innovation (CSI), which focuses on forms of social investment, civil society, and the social economy. Since 2026, the Max Weber Institute has also hosted the German Environmental Panel (GLEN), a nationwide, interdisciplinary panel study that examines environmental perceptions, practices, and policies over time.

The Max Weber Institute of Sociology comprises five professorships and two associated professorships, approximately 30 academic and administrative staff members, and around 500 students. It is explicitly committed to methodological and theoretical pluralism, which also shapes its teaching philosophy. The Institute’s work is further characterized by a dialogical institutional culture that fosters scholarly exchange across different status groups and research paradigms. The goal of teaching is to enable students to develop analytically robust research questions and concepts that are capable of addressing the empirical complexity of social phenomena—from both qualitative and quantitative perspectives.

Through numerous interdisciplinary and international collaborations, the Institute also offers its students opportunities to explore other disciplinary cultures and to undertake study periods at renowned universities in Europe and beyond.
