The Max Weber Institute is a long-established and internationally renowned institute of sociology. It has been a source of significant impetus for the development of the discipline, which continues to have an impact today.

In the 21st century, the institute continues this tradition and maintains its comparative perspective on society and culture in various research contexts. Research at the Max Weber Institute is divided into four main areas: sociological theory and history of sociology, comparative institutional and organizational analysis, comparative analyses of social inequalities, and methods of empirical social research. This thematic breadth reflects the heterogeneity and multi-paradigmatic character of sociology. Accordingly, the institute's work is both historical and theoretical-conceptual as well as empirical-analytical.

An overview of the individual research areas can be found here. Information on current doctoral projects at the institute is available here. Current and completed publications are accessible via the university bibliography heiBIB and the personal pages of the researchers at the institute.

In addition, the Max Weber Institute is involved in various projects and activities as part of Heidelberg University's Excellence Initiative. Further information on this can be found here.
