Research Methods of empirical social research
The research focus on methods of empirical social research centres on the development of scientific methods. Whilst teaching at the Max Weber Institute reflects methodological pluralism, this research focus primarily centres on data-generating processes in the quantitative social sciences, such as research into (comparative) survey methodology, social data science, the development of innovative survey forms and instruments, and the improvement of data quality in quantitative surveys.
Further methodological priorities lie in the statistical analysis of longitudinal data and life courses using panel and event data analysis, methods of network data analysis, as well as non-survey-based quantitative methods and the creation of large regional datasets based on official reports. Thematic areas closely linked to this field of research include, for example, the structuring of partner markets, private lifestyles, social networks, the social participation of people with a migration background, social determinants of mental and physical health, the radicalisation of local communities, and the stability of legal and economic institutions.
