Bachelor Internships

As part of the B.A. programme, the examination regulations require students to complete a compulsory internship lasting at least eight weeks and comprising 300 hours. This should take place during the summer break. Students may also apply for a leave of absence if they wish to undertake an internship during the academic term. However, this is only recommended in exceptional cases and should always be discussed in advance with the academic advisor or the staff of the Examination Office.

You may find internship opportunities under ‘Internship and Job Offers’. Please send your internship certificates and reports directly to Mr Abelmann; he will also be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Internship Report

The internship report is an account of your experiences during your internship and should provide a critical analysis of the placement in the context of your degree programme. A separate report must be submitted for each internship placement; however, the reports may be submitted as a single document. Each report should be at least 2–3 pages long.

Internship Certificate

This is issued by the internship provider and sets out the scope, nature of the work, location and address of the internship provider, and is signed. Normally, the internship certificate issued at the end of the placement should serve this purpose.

Internships and Erasmus

Internships as part of an Erasmus placement are also possible; Mr Abelmann is responsible for these as well. He draws up the agreements for the subject.

Certificate of Completion of the Mandatory Internship

A certificate confirming that the placement is a compulsory placement or counts towards your degree will be issued on request by the relevant member of staff in the Examinations Office.

Crediting of professional experience or substitute benefits

It is possible to demonstrate the competencies of the module through other achievements, such as professional experience. However, these are always individual cases and must be discussed with the internship supervisor and confirmed by the examination committee. In such cases, always contact Mr. Abelmann before submitting anything. Part-time or temporary work is generally not eligible for recognition. Work as a research assistant may be recognized; work as a tutor may be recognized after conducting two independent tutorials and attending a tutor training session.

For additional internships in 9.3, it is not possible to demonstrate competence through anything other than a traditional internship.

Combination of internships

It is possible to combine various internships or alternative assignments to demonstrate proficiency in order to complete Module 8.2. Please contact Mr. Abelmann in advance regarding this.

Steps for Recognizing the Internship in the B.A. Program

  • Completion of an internship lasting at least 8 weeks or totaling at least 300 hours (37.5 hours per week), e.g., in the case of part-time work or work-study positions.
  • The internship may be divided into two or more separate internships.
  • The internship should be related to sociology.
  • Upon completion of the internship, a one- to two-page short report must be written and submitted along with an internship certificate. The short report is not graded.
